Darnielle has said on his most recent tour that he’s tired of playing his older songs, the fan favorites, but he’s replaced the one-man-one-guitar aesthetic with something special. David Colemanįorget the John Darnielle of the early aughts, forget lo-fi and embrace the super-produced hi-fi concept albums of the new Mountain Goats, where the same effortlessly literary lyrics have found their home in haunting choral harmonies, piano-heavy melodies and a tight ensemble cast. I will await his next steps with interest. Admittedly, I might not be the best judge, but I’d wager that he’s rarely sounded better than he does on sublime cuts such as the timeless The Last Ten Years. This a rich and mature set of songs, in which producer Bernard Butler’s carefully considered instrumentation provides an ideal platform for Eitzel’s vocal to shine. Ferryman in the first place, but I’m certainly glad I did. Indeed, given that I’ve overlooked most of its creator’s career, I’m not entirely sure what prompted me to check out Hey Mr.
I’ve never been a particularly big American Music Club or Mark Eitzel fan. The arrangements of the album’s tracks are stunning, from the sparse opener Plastic 100☌ to the propulsive beat of Blood On Me, while the devastatingly beautiful, reflective piano ballad of (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano is one of the most heart-rending tracks of recent times. His voice is luscious, breathy and warm and aching with impartial soul. Process is ultimately an album that is harrowingly personal, doused with regret and placing the loss of his mother to cancer at the forefront of the record.
